Introduction
On 7 August 2024, the Department of Home Affairs introduced new updates to the English language requirements for Australian visas. These changes affect which English tests are accepted, how results are submitted, and the validity period of certain results. Understanding these updated requirements is crucial if you're applying for a student, skilled, partner, or employer-sponsored visa.
In this guide, we'll cover everything you need to know about meeting Australia's current English proficiency requirements as of 2025, including accepted tests, score thresholds, exemptions, and practical tips to prepare.
What Changed on 7 August 2024?
The key change implemented on 7 August 2024 was the removal of TOEFL iBT as an accepted test for visa applications — unless it was taken before 26 July 2023. In addition, submission and verification procedures for English test results have been tightened, requiring that:
Test results are sent directly to the Department of Home Affairs from the testing provider.
Paper-based or unofficial results are no longer accepted.
Result validity periods must strictly meet the 12- or 36-month limit depending on visa subclass.
These changes aim to enhance integrity and reduce fraud in visa processing.
Accepted English Language Tests (as of 7 August 2024)
Following the update, the Department of Home Affairs only accepts the following English language tests:
International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic
Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) (also known as C1 Advanced)
Occupational English Test (OET) – only accepted for specific healthcare-related visas
TOEFL iBT – Only valid if taken before 26 July 2023
IMPORTANT: From 7 August 2024, TOEFL iBT is no longer accepted unless your results were issued before 26 July 2023.
