Sharp Rise in Australian Working Holiday Visas Issued for Irish CitizensThursday, February 16, 2012
According to a recent report released by the Australian Government's Working Holiday Maker Visa Program, the number of working holiday visas granted to Irish citizens rose by 33 percent in 2011. The statistics showed that 11,911 Australian working holiday visas (WHV) were issued for Irish citizens in 2011, compared to 8,923 the previous year. Under the WHV program, young people at the age of 18 to 30 are allowed to work in Australia for up to six months with one Australian employer. A second WHV will also be granted for first time WHV holders carrying out 88 days regional work in a designated location. The report showed that the increase should continue for the foreseeable future, but that this will be "partly contingent upon the wider global economic situation" Mr. Martin Ferguson, Australian Minister for Tourism added the figures highlighted opportunities for the Australian tourism industry in 2012 and beyond. "While the high Australian dollar and affordable airfares are continuing to make overseas travel feasible for more Australians, Australia is consistently attracting a record number of international visitors," said Mr. Ferguson.
