Singapore-based budget airline Scoot has chosen The Gold Coast as its second international destination (after Sydney), according to its announcement on February 7, 2012.

The new low-cost carrier is expected to increase valuable air capacity, improve access and attract new international tourists to Australia. Operating five times a week from June 12, 2012 the new route will provide a further new international long-haul air route for Australian tourism and commerce.

According to tourism officials, the new route will help the local economy earn about $65 million a year. "For Australia to take out the first two spots in Scoot's rapidly expanding route network is fantastic news for our industry, and for the Gold Coast which is already witnessing something of a tourism renaissance, with the impressive new hotel developments of last year and more investment in the pipeline, boosted by last year's 2018 Commonwealth Games award", Andrew McEvoy, Managing Director, Tourism Australia indicated.

Singapore is one of the biggest and fastest growing markets for Australian tourism, representing Australia's sixth largest inbound tourism market. There were 317,000 Singaporeans visiting Australia in the twelve months to the end of November 2011, up 3.7 percent on the previous year. Australia projects that the Singapore market has the potential to increase to between $2.3 billion and $2.8 billion in overnight spending by 2020. The new route of Scoot will help Australia gain more exposure to new visitors from Singapore and the South East Asia region which continue to grow and have great favour for travelling to Australia.

Mr. McEvoy also stated that Australian Tourism would try to play a more strategic role in the aviation arena, using targeted marketing resources and strong partnerships with new and existing airlines to help grow competitive aviation capacity to the country.
