What Visa Do You Need to Work as a Nurse in Australia?
International nurses looking to work in Australia will typically need an employer-sponsored visa. The most common pathway is the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482), which allows employers to sponsor qualified overseas nurses for up to four years. The new Skills in Demand (SID) visa is also available for nurses on the skilled occupation list.
Before applying, nurses must complete a skills assessment through the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) and obtain registration with AHPRA. Once you have held your sponsored visa for a qualifying period, you may be eligible to transition to permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186).
For nurses considering regional areas, the Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491) and Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa (subclass 494) offer additional pathways with priority processing. Check the latest Australian visa fees and processing times to plan your application.
